Harp Pickups - Information & Photos
Below are some examples of External and Internal pickups. These are all custom designed for the harp. Pickups are used to amplify the sound of the harp and are a great way to increase volume during gigs and events. They are also great for using with electronic sound systems, pedals, loops etc.
Which harps can get a pickup installed?
Any brand, make or model of harp! just read the Q&A below to help you choose the right type of pickup to suit your harp and your needs.
How can I get my pickup installed?
This service can be provided alongside, or independantly to your harp service. Just use the booking form, select "Other" and then tell us what type harp you have and pickup you want. Then we'll book you in for the next available trip to your area. Alternatively, if you live remote and would like to attempt your own installation, we can ship it directly to you.
How much do installation and pickups cost?
Please view the pricelist here.
How many transducers do your pickups have?
Both External and Internal pickups come with 1, 2, 3 or 4 contact mics: aka.'heads' or 'transducers'. How many you choose will depend on how big your harp is and what your needs are. See next question for details.
What is the difference between 1, 2, 3 and 4 transducer pickups?
This relates to how many transducers will be placed on the soundboard of your harp to pick up the sound. The more transducers you have, the more you can allow for positioning at two, three or four spots on the soundboard, which can result in: improved balance of the sound, wider and absolutely flat frequency response, bigger sound spectrum, wider frequency range, and higher output. This means you can more easily control registers and sounds for adjusting bass, mid, treble etc. on your speaker/amplifier. However, with smaller harps, since there's a less frequency range, not as many transducers are required. Also, remember that sound quality is also greatly influenced by pairing it with good quality cables and speakers/equipment.
How many transducers should I choose for my harp? We recommend:
- For small lever harps (24-28 strings) 1 transducer
- For medium lever harps (34 strings) 1 - 2 transducers
- For larger lever harps/ small pedal harps (40 strings) - 2-3 transducers
- For semigrand/Concert Grand pedal harps (46-47 strings) - 2 - 4 transducers
What do I need to operate my pickup?
These pickups do not require a battery to operate! All you need to have is a 1/4" standard jack cable and your very own portable speaker. You will need to get your own brand/quality of cable & speaker to suit your needs.
Are there any portable speakers that you would recommend?
We have heard great results from harpists using the Bose S1 Pro portable battery powered speaker. Another great portable one is Fishman Loubox Mini. Of course, we recommend these top-of-the-range speakers but other options/pricepoints are available.
